 Boat trailers are classed as motor-vehicles under the Mechanical Repairers Act 1980. The inspection, servicing and repair of trailers is regulated by the NSW Department of Fair Trading (DOFT), which requires that businesses and technicians providing these services are suitably certified and licensed.

BIA has negotiated with DOFT a restricted licensing regime for providers of services to boat trailers, which requires that technicians have achieved competency in AURT237271A - Service and Repair Trailers
Whilst automotive-qualified technicians will have met the DOFT requirements for certification, some qualified marine mechanics may not. The required competency was not included in the Marine Mechanical Training Package until 2005, and therefore marine mechanics who qualified prior to 2005 may need to achieve this competency to satisfy DOFT requirements.
This course will provide you with the relevant unit of competency required for you to be certified by NSW Department of Fair Trading, which then permits you to legally service and repair trailers in NSW within a licensed business.
You should be aware that there are significant fines for non-compliance with the Motor Vehicles Repair Act, and we recommend that you consult your insurer if your business does not hold the required licenses and trade certificates.

Marine technicians/mechanics without prior automotive trade qualifications, who are looking to obtain a licence from Department of Fair Trading to inspect, service and repair trailers.
